Indonesia is getting closer to its ambition of becoming the leading aircraft maintenance hub in the Asia-Pacific region. With the rapid growth of the aviation industry post-pandemic, the country’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sector has seen a significant surge in demand. In response, several airports have begun developing MRO facilities to accommodate this increasing need.
According to Andi Fahrurrozi, Chairman of the Indonesia Aircraft Maintenance Services Association (IAMSA), Indonesia’s MRO industry is experiencing remarkable growth. As airlines reactivate their fleets post-pandemic, the demand for maintenance has skyrocketed.
“Indonesia’s MRO industry continues to grow, but we still face several challenges. Currently, 90% of airframe maintenance in hangars can be handled by domestic MROs,” he stated in an interview with AviaX on March 7, 2025.
Challenges: Dependence on Imported Engines and Components
Although Indonesia has successfully localized airframe maintenance, the country still faces significant challenges in other areas—particularly its dependence on imported spare parts, engines, and aircraft components.
“Engine and component repairs remain major challenges. Additionally, our supply chain is still reliant on imports, as most spare parts are not yet produced domestically,” Andi explained.
This dependency results in higher operational costs and longer turnaround times, affecting the overall efficiency of Indonesia’s MRO industry.
Solutions: Investment, Regulations, and OEM Collaboration
To address these challenges, Andi emphasized the need for stronger government support in the form of incentives and regulatory frameworks—similar to policies already in place in competing countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
“With the significant increase in aircraft numbers in Indonesia, we have a great opportunity to strengthen our domestic MRO capacity and reduce reliance on foreign services,” he noted.
Beyond regulations, investments in engine and component maintenance facilities are crucial, alongside workforce development and technology enhancements. IAMSA continues to push for strategic partnerships with investors and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to collaborate with local MROs and expand national industry capabilities.
